  • ⚒️Designing with the Unexpected: The Layered Self in the AI Age

How do we actually live this dynamic equilibrium? The answer is simple: Today, we are shifting our view of life and creativity. Instead of chasing a fixed, perfect goal, we are learning to adapt to a changing environment. This mindset of welcoming “noise” and constantly remaking ourselves changes how we define who we are.

In the past, we believed each person had one solid identity and a single voice. But now, as we constantly chat with generative AI, we are no longer just a single author. We are becoming more layered, holding multiple perspectives within ourselves. When we react to the unexpected ideas (the “noise”) that AI throws at us, we discover new sides of our own creativity. Working with AI is not about using a perfect tool; it is about expanding who we can be.

This shift also changes what it means to be creative. Today, anyone can use AI to make something “perfect” or predictable without any mistakes. This means predictable answers are no longer special. The new skill is no longer about turning a fixed idea into a 100% accurate product. Instead, it is about purposely mixing in uncertainty, seeing the unexpected results from the AI, and using our human intuition to say, “Yes, this is it.” The new creativity is knowing how to spark and choose the best moments of accidental genius.

To live this way, however, we must question the modern obsession with speed and efficiency. AI can give us an answer in a second, but humans need time to process unexpected ideas and update their values. Turning mistakes and surprises into real learning requires us to slow down and take the long way. We should not just blindly run after the speed of technology. To keep our human warmth and dignity, we need to protect our right to stop, pause, and sit with uncertainty.

By looking into the mirror of AI—the ultimate tool for efficiency—we are ironically reminded of what makes us truly alive: we are imperfect, always changing, and never fully finished. Surviving the AI age is not about building a rigid castle around ourselves. Instead, we should be like a wind chime. We must let the wind of new technology and other people’s ideas blow through us, changing our shape and making beautiful, unexpected music as we go.
