The sun was bright and hot on the sand. The women worked by the coals, putting the fish and the shellfish on sharp sticks. They roasted them over the fire. The wind came off the sea, carrying the smoke and the good smell of the cooking fish.
Out on the blue water, the men went out. There were a thousand boats. They flew the big flags for a heavy catch, and the flags snapped in the wind as the boats moved out into the deep stream.
